According to reporting from Fronteras, The Arizona Department of Water Resources is planning public meetings Dec. 7 and 10 regarding a proposal to lease tribal water for non-tribal use. The Colorado River Indian Tribes on the western edge of Arizona have the largest share of first-priority Colorado River water rights in the state. The tribal council voted in 2019 to move forward with leasing the water; however, federal statutes currently prohibit the lease from occurring. The tribes have proposed a bill, but don’t currently have a sponsor in Congress.
