According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, Texas has asked New Mexico to release all the water it can spare into the Rio Grande so it will flow south to Elephant Butte Reservoir, a main water supply hub for southwestern Texas. Officials plan to release 948 acre-feet of water to help repay a portion of the water debt New Mexico owes to the Lone Star state. The release is set for Thursday and will last five days, giving kayakers a chance to enjoy the rare, high flows in the river.
