According to the Los Angeles Times, San Diego has ambitious plans for a pipeline that would carry Colorado River water more than 130 miles from the Imperial Valley – through the Anza-Borrego Dessert State Park, tunneling under the Cuyamaca Mountains, and passing through the Cleveland National Forest – to connect with a water treatment plant in San Marcos. The estimated cost is roughly $5 billion. The region has received most of its water through a series of pipes and canals to the north via the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, or MWD. The new pipeline would connect San Diego directly to the Imperial Irrigation District, or IID. Residents of Borrego Springs, environmentalists, and others have expressed concerns regarding the cost and other impacts.
