According to the Flathead Beacon, Montana’s Senate Natural Resource Committee recently rejected a bill that would have repealed a newly adopted water quality standard to protect fish species in Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River. Had Senate Bill 324 advanced it would have created conflict with the federal Clean Water Act. The water quality standards were adopted to protect aquatic life from rising selenium levels that have been traced to mining operations in British Columbia’s Elk River Valley.
