Briefly: Outstanding Waters status sought to preserve cutthroat habitat in Dolores watershed

According to The Durango Herald, the Dolores River Anglers Chapter of Trout Unlimited is seeking protection for nine stream reaches within the San Juan National Forest and Upper Dolores watershed. Together with Dolores River Anglers and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the group identified the nine stream reaches as candidates for Outstanding Waters status, which would offer increased water quality protection, in order to preserve habitat for native cutthroat trout. Designation requests are reviewed and determined by the Water Quality Control Commission of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The process is expected to take up to three years and includes three public hearings. The first hearing concluded in November 2020 and the other two hearings are scheduled to occur in November 2021 and June 2022.
