According to USA TODAY and Indiana University’s Arnolt Center for Investigative Journalism, water tanks across the United States pose a myriad of public health risks. The lack of federal regulations governing the maintenance of water tanks leaves each state to determine the frequency of inspections and maintenance requirements. The Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA) released a survey to members in 2020 inquiring about water tank regulations. Only nine states reported that they require interior inspections examining sediment buildup and the existence of animal carcasses.
