Aspen Journalism reports that an avian-monitoring program run by Audubon Rockies is examining how birds use irrigated agricultural lands. As a result of existing flood irrigation, birds have come to rely on artificially created wetlands which may be threatened by a potential demand management program. The state is considering paying irrigators to temporarily dry up fields to move more water downstream. The monitoring is taking place on seven ranches around Kremmling, Colo., that are also part of a larger water study which is evaluating conserved consumptive use in the upper Colorado River Basin.
