According to the Los Angeles Times, farmers along the Colorado River are being paid to leave portions of their land dry and fallow. In an effort to reduce reliance on the Colorado River, growers in the Palo Verde Irrigation District are participating in a $38 million program funded by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and others. The amount of water saved over the next three years is expected to equate to 3 vertical feet of additional water in Lake Mead.
