Briefly: Western rivers may be capturing, rather than emitting carbon

Wyoming Public Media reports on new research that may overturn long-held beliefs about Western rivers and their ability to capture carbon and which could impact how we measure carbon emissions. According to an article recently published in Science magazine, though rivers in the eastern U.S. are thought to add carbon to the atmosphere due to the plant debris they carry, the West’s rivers may be absorbing carbon because they gather less plant matter from semi-arid and desert regions through which they flow.
