Briefly: California dives deep to create water-friendly food crops

According to The Mercury News, the University of California at Davis is working to reinvent food production within the state. Researchers are focused on creating crops that utilize less water and still provide a hearty yield. Unfortunately, it can take more than 20 years for fruit and nut trees to mature. Orchard owners facing drought conditions have already resorted to digging deeper wells, further contributing to California’s water crisis.
