KUNC reports that California’s Imperial Irrigation District, which controls the largest water right on the Colorado River, has agreed to cut back its water use by 100,000 acre-feet this year, in exchange for millions of dollars in payments from the federal government. The amount is less than half the 250,000 acre-feet the district said it would cut earlier this year. It cited procedural problems with getting the larger conservation initiative underway right now and it said larger savings would come later. An acre-foot is the amount of water needed to cover one acre of land to a height of one foot and enough to supply two households, on average, for a year.
