AP News reports that NASA launched an online platform last week that examines how much water evaporates into the atmosphere in the Western United States from plants and crops as they grow. OpenET utilizes satellite imagery from the Landsat program and provides data for 17 Western states that could help farmers and other water managers better plan for dry conditions, including how to increase irrigation efficiency. According to NASA, the platform includes historical data dating back to 1984 and will be expanded to include precipitation data and, eventually, information about other states beyond the West.
