The Missoulian reports that Teck Resources hopes to expand its coal mining in British Columbia. However, water quality monitors in Canada and the United States have expressed concern because the company’s current mines have already been sanctioned for misconduct. Teck Resources pleaded guilty to two counts of illegally discharging selenium and other pollutants into the watershed on March 26, 2021. The company paid a $60 million fine. The semi-annual U.S.-Canada International Joint Commission’s meeting will take place April 16, where Teck Resources plans to expand will likely be discussed.
