Wyoming Public Media reports that an advisory board in Laramie, Wyo., has set a precedent by denying eight permits to drill high-capacity water wells. Ranchers in the community came together to oppose the Lerwick family’s proposal to pump over 4,600 acre-feet of water. Concerns that the water would not be used for agricultural purposes but rather sold later for fracking or municipal use stirred conflict. Board members determined that allowing the water wells to be drilled would place too much stress on the aquifer in southeast Wyoming.
