CBS4 reports that Greeley had to cease drawing water from the Cache La Poudre River last week because of ash and debris. Generally, Greeley draws about 45% of its water from the Poudre. When the river isn’t a viable option, they turn to sourcing from Horsetooth Reservoir, which contains mostly water diverted from the Colorado River headwaters west of the Continental Divide. Colorado Senate Bill 240 recently approved roughly $30 million for the Colorado Water Conservation Board to distribute to mitigate watersheds affected by wildfire across the state, including affected areas in Northern Colorado. However, the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires have left more than $100 million in mitigation needs, according to Sean Chambers, Greeley’s water and sewer utilities director.
