After the City of Aspen implemented Stage 2 water restriction on Sept. 1, residents and businesses were able to reduce consumption by 20 percent, Aspen Journalism reported over the weekend. Aspen City Council opted to apply restrictions after the U.S. Drought Monitor classified Pitkin County as being in extreme drought on Aug. 18. Restrictions include staggered watering schedules and prohibit construction of new landscapes and water systems. Stage 2 conditions will stay in place as long as Pitkin County remains in extreme drought, which is estimated to be into 2021 according to Steve Hunter, utilities operation manager for the city’s water department.
