The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reached a $6,521,025 settlement around the clean up of contaminated groundwater at the Omega Chemical Corporation Superfund site located in Whittier, Calif. The Superfund site was formerly home to a refrigerant and solvent recycling facility that operated between 1976 and 1991. The EPA has overseen the removal of more than 12,500 pounds of contaminants and the treatment of more than 30 million gallons of contaminated groundwater since 2009. As of April 2019, the EPA has been able to recover $27 million of the $42 million spent on cleanup since 1999 from a series of settlement agreements. The recent settlement was announced on May 31, 2020 and is subject to a 30-day comment period before becoming final. Read more in this report from the California Water News Daily.
