The Gazette reported last week that Colorado Springs could spend $45 million over 15 years to fulfill the requirements of a proposed consent decree to end a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other groups, regarding the city’s poor stormwater management. The lawsuit was filed in 2016 and claimed that Colorado Springs’ stormwater control efforts were underfunded and understaffed; this has resulted in the degradation, erosion, and widening of Fountain Creek and its tributaries. The proposed consent decree would hold the city accountable for completion of the stormwater projects needed to improve water quality.
