Scientists at Utah State University have developed a tool that allows the forecasting of drought and water flow in the Colorado River years in advance. While current drought forecasts focus on short-term indicators, this new approach utilizes long-term ocean memory, associated atmospheric effects, and the filtering effects of land systems. Their paper, “Colorado River water supply is predictable on multi-year timescales owing to long-term ocean memory,” was published in Communications Earth and Environment.
