In Brief: House dems ask Centers for Disease Control to prohibit water disconnects

Last week Circle of Blue reported that Democratic representatives Harley Rouda of California and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to use their authority to suspend water service disconnections nationwide. Frequent hand washing is on of the CDC’s top recommendations for protection against COVID-19 and requires access to water. The Public Health Service Act gives the Department of Health and Human Services authority to prevent the spread of infectious disease and authorizes the CDC to issue regulations to achieve the goal of prevention. The need for revenue and a lack of congressional aid to the water sector have left many feeling concerned regarding the potential impacts of a shutoff moratorium.
